This Maekake apron features “Yokozuna,” an ukiyo-e design by Daimon Kinoshita, renowned for his sumo nishiki-e prints.
The artwork depicts a historic match between two great champions of the Edo period: Tanikaze Kajinosuke, a legendary yokozuna, and the 5th yokozuna, Onogawa Kisaburō.

Daimon Kinoshita is originally from Hokkaido Prefecture and uses the playful pseudonym “Mon-Ami” for his illustration works. Since 1980, he has been active as an ukiyo-e artist. In 1985, the Nippon Sumo Association decided to revive the old tradition of Sumo nishiki-e and commissioned a series of ukiyo-e prints of sumo wrestlers from Daimon Kinoshita to commemorate the opening of the National Sports Arena in Ryogoku.
